Place Name Query Tool
The Place Name tool allows you to define your area of interest by entering a feature name or a zip code. Click on one of the following links for help using the Place Name tool:

Zip Code Entry
US Feature Entry
World Feature Entry
United States Zip Code Entry:
- Step 1
- Click on the United States tab. (This is the default tab)
- Step 2
- Enter a zip code in the Place Name box.
- Select "Zip Code" from the Feature Type list.
- Click on the Search icon. This brings up a reference map, showing the general location of the zip code you entered.
- Step 3
- Click on the Select icon from the reference map. This passes your zip code coordinates to the Spatial Coverage box. (You may also use the Map Rectangle feature to draw an area around the zip code point)
United States Feature Entry:
- Step 1
- Click on the United States tab. (This is the default tab)
- Step 2
- Type in the name of a feature in the Place Name box.
- Click on the State in which the feature resides.
- Select a feature type from the Feature Type list.
- Click on the Search icon.
- Step 3
- You are presented with a list of up to 100 items that matched your
criteria and a reference map showing the general location of the first
highlighted item on the list. If the highlighted item is not the feature you want, click on another item. This action brings up a
new reference map, showing the general location of the highlighted feature you selected. It may be necessary to refine your search if more than 100 features are found.
- Click on the Select icon from the reference map. This passes the feature coordinates to the Spatial Coverage box. (You may also use the Map Rectangle feature to draw an area around the place name point)
World Feature Entry:
- Step 1
- Step 2
- Enter the feature name in the Place Name box.
- Click on the country in which the feature resides.
- If the name you entered is NOT a populated place, click on the corresponding feature class in the Feature Class list.
- Select a feature type from the Feature Type list.
- Click on the Search icon.
- Step 3
- You are presented with a list of up to 100 items that matched your
criteria and a reference map showing the general location of the first
highlighted item on the list.
If the highlighted item is not the feature you want, click on another item.
This brings up a new reference map showing the general location of the feature you selected. It may be necessary to refine your search if more than 100 features are found.
