Data set definition: A global 1 km AVHRR data set refers to 5 channel, 10-bit, raw AVHRR data, at 1.1 km resolution (nadir), collected continuously for one complete year for each daily orbital pass over land surfaces and coastal zones using NOAA's TIROS "afternoon" polar-orbiting satellites.

Data requirements:

  1. Collect and archive 1 km AVHRR data (afternoon satellite) for each segment of every orbital pass which falls within the coverage area of the receiving station.
  2. Data needs to be collected daily for each orbital segment for one complete year, starting in March, 1992.
  3. Data needs to be 5 channel, 10-bit raw data with 2048 pixels per band. 10-bit data may be stored in 16 bits or three 10-bit pixels can be stored in 32 bits. Specify if data is packed or unpacked.
  4. The first 103 words from the raw/acquired data are required.
  5. Define how dropped or missed data lines are corrected or compensated for.

Format Requirements:

  1. Band Interleaved Pixel (BIP)
  2. ANSI labeled
  3. Volume ID six characters long to indicate receiving station
  4. File label format: ARSSMMDDYYHHMMSS where:

    A = AVHRR data
    R = How received (H=HRPT, L=LAC, G=GAC)
    SS = Satellite Number (11=NOAA-11), 14=NOAA-14
    MM = Month of acquisition
    DD = Day of acquisition
    YY = Year of acquisition
    HH = Start hour of acquisition
    MM = Start minute of acquisition
    SS = Start second of acquisition

    (Example = AH11071591130422)

  5. For multi-file non-ANSI labeled tapes, we need to have one tape mark to signify the END OF FILE (EOF), and two tape marks to indicate the END OF VOLUME (EOV).

Transfer Media Requirement:

  1. Eight mm high or low density cartridges

Transfer Mechanism:

  1. Mail on a monthly basis

Conditions for Participation:

Please indicate your requirements for participation. For example, if there are technical, administrative, or funding problems which may affect your participation in this global 1 km AVHRR project, you need to inform us of these so that we can factor them into our planning process and begin discussing solutions.
