Geographic Coordinate Formats

Geographic coorinates can be entered in either decimal degrees or degrees, minutes and seconds (the minutes and seconds are optional). Northern latitudes and eastern longitudes are positive and southern latitudes and western longitudes are negative. Direction designations of "N", "S", "E" or "W" can also be used. For example, all of the following refer to the same latitude:

N40D 43M
+40.716666
40.716666
40 43

Similarly, all of the following represent the same longitude:

W73D 59M
-73.983333
W73 59
W73D 59M 0S
